Jan Egeland

Secretary General, Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC)

Jan Egeland is currently Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council. Prior to joining the NRC in 2013, he was Europe Director of Human Rights Watch. He served as Executive Director of the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs from 2006-2013.

From 2003-2006, Egeland served as UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, where he brought in important reforms to the global humanitarian response system. He also played a major role in organising the international response to the Asian Tsunami, as well as crises in Darfur, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Lebanon. 

From 1999 to 2002, he was the UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Colombia, and from 1990 to 1997 he was Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs in the Norwegian government.
