International Migration journal cover

Professor Dawn Chatty has a new commentary piece in the journal International Migration: When Hospitality turns into Hostility in Prolonged Forced Migration. Here she writes that asylum and sanctuary are forms of hospitality that are universal in all societies in one form or another, but hospitality is not unconditional. While conditional hospitality was the majority position in 2015 (at the height of the refugee ‘crisis’ in Europe), in 2020 it seems to be losing ground and hostility to the forced migrant is growing. She considers whether this lack of moral courage can be addressed: “Can previous examples of comprehensive plans of action redress our current quagmire and point us back to a more hospitable approach to mass influx forced migration?”
