Human movement and the vulnerable
Professor Ian Clark (Aberystwyth University)
Public Seminar Series
Wednesday, 23 October 2013, 5pm to 6.30pm
Seminar Room 1, Oxford Department of International Development, University of Oxford, 3 Mansfield Road, Oxford OX1 3TB
Issues of human movement are inextricably bound up with the development of international society. It is hard to think of any other dimension of human life where the highly selective impact of its norms is so clearly demonstrated. Essential here is the powerful impact of the categories used by international society to manage this issue: migrants, illegal migrants, refugees and internally displaced persons. This seminar addresses how the vulnerability of various categories of people is directly related to the normative structures that international society has put in place. The presentation is partly based on Professor Ian Clark’s new book, The Vulnerable in International Society (Oxford University Press).
Refreshments will be provided after the event.
