Julia Schweers
Research Associate
Julia is a post-doctoral Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute’s Robert Schuman Centre, where she is part of the Global Governance Programme and linked with the ‘Global Citizenship’ research group and the ‘Conflict and Interventions’ research group.
Her research lies in refugee and migration studies, where she is broadly interested in two topics: 1) citizenship policies and the socio-economic effects of naturalisation; 2), refugee policies in authoritarian regimes. Methodologically, her research combines expert interviews with archival research (at UN organisations, parliaments, refugee agencies) and biographical interviews.
She has an interdisciplinary background in Political Science, African Studies and Sociology and holds a DPhil in Migration Studies from the University of Oxford (Centre on Migration, Policy, and Society). She was previously a postdoctoral researcher at the Refugee Economies Programme within the Refugee Studies Centre. She also conducted research for the Horizon 2020 project ‚Aligning Migration Management and the Migration–Development Nexus‘, and spent a year in journalism between her master’s degree and her doctorate studies.
