Tyler Valiquette

Visiting Fellow

Tyler Valiquette is a PhD candidate in Human Geography at University College London and an SSHRC Doctoral Fellow. His research examines queer migration from Venezuela to Brazil and Colombia, with a focus on state-led, humanitarian, and community responses to displacement. Over the past five years, Tyler has conducted over 200 interviews with LGBTQI+ Venezuelan migrants and refugees in São Paulo, Bogotá, Cúcuta, Boa Vista, and Manaus.

Tyler specializes in participatory research methodologies including participatory sociograms, photovoice, and videovoice and has co-designed workshops in São Paulo, exploring the experiences of queer migrants through their own lens. He has presented his work at COMPAS and collaborates closely with policymakers and advocacy groups across the Americas.

His expertise in LGBTQI+ rights and migration builds on a background in political science, advocacy, and research. He previously studied queer social movements and countermovements in Latin America, lecturing at the University of Brasília and collaborating with Casa Miga, one of Latin America's few LGBTQI+ shelters for Venezuelan refugees.
