In a new podcast for Oxford Human Rights Hub, Dr Catherine Briddick gives an overview of the UK-Rwanda policy and recent the UK Supreme Court judgment which found the policy to be unlawful.

In April 2022, the UK and Rwanda agreed a Migration and Economic Development Partnership, which included a five-year ‘asylum partnership arrangement’ detailed in a Memorandum of Understanding. This agreement sought to enable the transfer of asylum-seekers from the UK to Rwanda to have their claims for protection determined there.

In November 2023, the UK Supreme Court held that the policy to remove asylum seekers to Rwanda was unlawful. The Court found that Rwanda was not a safe place for asylum seekers to be sent to.
