With the Illegal Migration Bill, the UK is the latest country in the Global North to prioritise resettlement schemes over accepting asylum-seekers who arrive at the border, very much playing from the handbook written by Australia in the 2000s. But as Matthew Gibney writes in World Politics Review this week, there are more humane and considered ways to treat migration. He argues that “A more comprehensive response would start by recognizing the reasons why refugees undertake risky voyages to reach countries in the Global North. They often do so not because asylum closer to home is entirely unavailable, but because it is unsatisfactory.”
