The Council on Foreign Relations has this week interviewed the RSC Director, Alexander Betts, about the refugee ‘crisis’ and shifting the focus of the refugee regime from refugee camps to integration and economic development, from just assisting vulnerable people to empowering capable people.
Betts says, “we need a paradigm shift—one that is not based on seeing refugees just as having vulnerabilities, but one that recognizes their capacities; one that isn’t just focused on seeing refugees as passive victims, but as people with agency.”
The interview covers issues such as the disproportionate burden placed on developing nations, lack of funding, security concerns, special economic zones, and the barriers to integration.
