about the speaker
Dorota Woroniecka-Krzyzanowska is a PhD candidate at the Graduate School for Social Research, Polish Academy of Sciences. In her research, she conducts extensive ethnographic fieldwork and combines anthropology with sociology to examine daily life in societies marked by long-term conflict.
She received her MA from the University of Warsaw; her thesis examined the role of sporting clubs in everyday life in Belfast during the Troubles. In her PhD dissertation Dorota analyses the experience of extended exile and living in a Palestinian refugee city-camp in the West Bank, where she spent eight months doing fieldwork. Aside from pursuing a PhD in sociology, she also holds a BA in Arabic linguistics and culture from the Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Warsaw. Dorota was a Visiting Study Fellow at the Refugee Studies Centre in Trinity Term 2012. She has received a research grant and a scholarship for her PhD work from the Polish National Science Centre.
The title of her paper is: 'Palestinian refugee camp as a form of locality: place-making and community building in extended exile'.
