Investigating the role of policies in refugees' integration: potential and challenges of a qualitative comparative analysis approach

About the speaker

Asya Pisarevskaya is a PhD candidate in Sociology and Methodology of Social Research at the Universities of Milan and Turin, which are part of the Inter-University Network for the Advancement of Social and Political Studies (NASP) in the north of Italy.

Her current research interests are focused on integration policies for humanitarian migrants, economic self-sufficiency and comparative methodology. She has taught several lectures at the University of Milan on the topic of public opinion towards out-groups as part of a MA course on Immigration policies.

Recently, she won a Study Award from the Foundation Isacchi Samaja to develop her PhD research project. These awards are for junior researchers in Italian universities contributing to the understanding of problems related to poverty, inequality and social exclusion.

In her research, she is giving a systematic overview of the integration policies of several European countries and identifying configurations of policy instruments, which facilitate the economic integration of refugees.

In 2011, Asya graduated with honours in Sociology from Moscow State Linguistic University. She then went on to obtain a Joint European Erasmus Mundus Master Degree in International Migration and Social Cohesion (MISOCO) from University of Amsterdam (Netherlands), University of Deusto (Spain) and University of Osnabrück (Germany). Her research topic was the study of attitudes of a receiving population towards immigrants and methodological challenges to measure that.

The title of her research is: “Compositional effects of asylum and refugee policy instruments on economic integration of protected humanitarian migrants in European countries: qualitative comparative analysis”.
