About the speaker
Yulia is pursuing DPhil in Law under the supervision of Dr Cathryn Costello and Dr Eirik Bjorge. Her research project examines institutional fragmentation of international law related to asylum-seeking children. She co-convenes the Refugee and Migration Law Discussion Group at the Law Faculty (2015/2017).
Yulia served as the Law Faculty Graduate Teaching Assistant in Public International Law and as the St Catherine's College Tutor in Public International Law and International Human Rights Law (2015/2016). She also tutored the University of Oxford team in International Human Rights Law in preparation for the 2016 Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. Yulia was formerly an Internships Coordinator on the Oxford Pro Bono Publico Executive Committee, the graduate student pro bono wing of the Law Faculty (2014/2015).
Yulia holds LL.B (Hons) and LL.M (Hons) degrees from Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University Institute of International Relations, Ukraine. Yulia also has completed LL.M degree with concentration in International Human Rights Law from Harvard Law School, where she worked at the Immigration and Refugee Law Clinic and received honours for her thesis on refugee law (under the supervision of Prof. Gerald Neuman). She served as an Article Editor for the Harvard International Law Journal.
Before starting her DPhil, Yulia worked at the UNHCR Representation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where she advised legal aid NGOs on strategic litigation opportunities, including in international context; and was certified as the UNHCR trainer in Sexual and Gender Based Violence Facilitation of Protection Learning. Previously, Yulia worked with the UNHCR Regional Representation for Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine, and the Ukrainian Red Cross Society.
Yulia is admitted to the New York State Bar and qualified to practise law in Ukraine.
