The RSC Director, Professor Alexander Betts, has been speaking with Patrick Kingsley, The Guardian’s migration correspondent, about the Syrian refugee crisis, and particularly the proposal for the development of special economic zones put forward by Betts and Professor Sir Paul Collier in a recent Foreign Affairs article. Betts told Kingsley that economic zones “can play an important pragmatic role in moving forward economic and educational opportunities” for Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries. However, he stressed that they are only one element of a comprehensive response to the refugee crisis, and should not be seen as an alternative to asylum in Europe.
