Commentary: When Hospitality turns into Hostility in Prolonged Forced Migration

Dawn Chatty

Asylum and sanctuary are forms of hospitality that are universal in all societies in one form or another. Yet, hospitality has conditions as Derrida has explored (2000). Conditional hospitality was clearly a majority position in 2015, yet now in 2020 it seems to be losing ground and hostility to the forced migrant is growing in the West. Can this lack of moral courage be addressed successful? Can previous examples of comprehensive plans of action redress our current quagmire and point us back to a more hospitable approach to mass influx forced migration?
