2013 sets new record for violence against civilian aid operations; UN campaigns for greater protection; wreath-laying ceremony in memory of humanitarian workers who have died in the service of others

Today, events are taking place around the world to commemorate all people who have lost their lives in humanitarian service and to celebrate the spirit that inspires humanitarian work around the world. As figures released by Humanitarian Outcomes show that 2013 set a new record for violence against civilian aid operations, with 251 separate attacks affecting 460 aid workers, the UN and its humanitarian partners continue their campaign, 'The world needs more…', which is calling for greater protection of humanitarians.

Here in the UK, an evensong service and wreath-laying ceremony will take place at Westminster Abbey, London, in memory of humanitarian workers who have died in the service of others. Gil Loescher, Visiting Professor at the RSC, will lay the wreath at the Memorial for Innocent Victims. The event is free and open to the public. Evensong begins at 5pm and the wreath-laying ceremony takes place at 6pm.
