Dr Costello's piece, 'Reflections on an anniversary: EU citizenship at 20', examines the changes that have taken place in Europe since the Maastricht Treaty came into force on 1 November 1993, and the tensions between national sovereignty and EU law, as well as freedom of movement and citizenship rights.
In his piece entitled 'Asylum: principled hypocrisy', Dr Gibney looks at the way in which Western states embrace the principle of asylum, but at the same time often make accessing asylum difficult for those who need it.
RSC Research Associate Dr Nando Sigona also contributes a piece entitled 'EU citizenship, Roma mobility and anti-gypsyism: time for reframing the debate?' on the need for the EU to adopt a new approach in order to address the root causes of Roma exclusion.
From the publishers:
The publication of this Anthology coincides with the 10th anniversary of COMPAS. Edited by Professor Bridget Anderson and Professor Michael Keith, entries include work of our staff, past and present, as well as contributions from scholars who have collaborated with and/or been admired by the COMPAS team.
We have combined academic writing with a selection of images from annual COMPAS photography competitions, and selected poems drawn from poetry competitions for adults and children. We hope that as well as a resource for teaching and research, the anthology will serve as a provocation.
COMPAS is an ESRC-funded research centre within the University's School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography.
