about the speaker

Marian Gatzweiler is a PhD candidate at the University of Edinburgh Business School. Marian is located in the accounting department and his research on humanitarian performance and accountability standards follows an inter-disciplinary approach, drawing from science and technology studies and political science. A central focus of the research lies on the question of how distinctive fields of knowledge production, such as health sciences, politics, moral philosophy or accounting are made to interact through humanitarian standards and thereby shape notions of humanitarian value(s) and accountability. The study hereby contributes to research that understands performance measurement systems as deriving their influence not necessarily from their functional capacities of providing objective and transparent representations of performance, but by offering spaces through which information can be organized and meaning can be negotiated between a variety of actors. For his PhD research, Marian visited several refugee camps in Jordan and conducted in-depth interviews with a wide variety of field workers who interact with the performance standards in their daily work.

Marian holds a MLitt from the University of St. Andrews and receives an Accounting and Finance scholarship from the University of Edinburgh Business School for his PhD research.
