Today European Union leaders are meeting in Luxembourg to discuss their response to the Mediterranean migrant and refugee crisis. In an interview yesterday with Al-Jazeera America, Professor Dawn Chatty stressed the fact that many of the people aboard the boats are “bona fide asylum seekers”, whether from Syria, Iraq or elsewhere, and that by refusing to be more proactive in protecting them, Europe is shirking its obligations under international law.
We await the outcome of today's meeting with interest.
