Mariagiulia Giuffré, LLM, PhD (Dist. and Doctor Europaeus certificate) is a Lecturer in Law at Edge Hill University. Her current research on ‘Asylum Control and Access to Protection: Admission, Readmission, and Human Rights’ lies at the intersection of migration control and refugee protection standards. She is an Affiliate to the Refugee Law Initiative (RLI) and a Member of the Lund/Uppsala Migration Law Network (L/UMIN). She has been a Guest Lecturer at Queen Mary, University of London, and a Research Fellow at the Centre of Migration Law at the Radboud University of Nijmegen. From October 2010 to September 2013, Mariagiulia was affiliated as a Visiting Researcher at the Faculty of Law, Lund University, where she taught on the LLM programmes in Maritime Law and International Human Rights Law.

Her research interests are in International and European Law, Refugee Law and Policy, Human Rights and Migration Law. Recent works include: Exploring the Boundaries of Refugee Law: Current Protection Challenges, Brill 2015 (with Gauci & Tsourdi). Mariagiulia is also part of a project jointly convened by the Centre for International Criminal Justice (Free University of Amsterdam) and the RLI on excluded asylum-seekers and other migrants suspected of serious criminality but who cannot be removed.

The title of her paper is: ‘Undesirable and unreturnable? Diplomatic assurances and human rights barriers to removal’.
